The lighting and the background for this portrait cost me a grand total of $2.99. Sure the 70-200VR helped these shots a lot, but they could have easily been done with any fast prime lens 85mm or longer.
The lighting is simply a large window. Any large window in your studio or your clients’ house puts out great light. In our house we have three smaller windows, I can stick a subject in front of those windows and get just as good light. Just look for any soft light coming through some windows and you’ve got free studio lighting.
The background? I went to Ikea and they have cheap black fleece blankets for $2.99. I got one in white and one in black. So I can shoot basically any baby that comes through our door, give great light and great backgrounds for a grand total of $5.98.
Most of the best portraits I’ve ever seen have been done with natural light and simple backgrounds. You don’t have to break the bank in order to create high end portraiture, simply believe in yourself, shoot smart and connect with the client.
Gorgeous, simple and cheap – I’ll have to get one of those blankets myself!
